High-Temperature Adhesive Based on Polybenzoxazine for Fabricating Outermost Aluminized Glass Fabric in Fire Proximity Clothing

In this work, we have synthesized a diol functional benzoxazine (Bz-DO) for which the curing process and flexibility were optimized using an amine functionalized polymer based on butadiene and acrylonitrile (ATBN). The prepared polymer formulation was used for laminating glass fabric and an aluminized polyester film for use as the outermost reflective layer of fire proximity clothing. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) 1971 requirements were considered in order to validate the usability of the material as a better adhesive to be used in fire proximity suits. For this purpose, different formulations of Bz-DO with an amine-containing polymer (ATBN) were investigated for fast curing at low temperature. Temperature sweep rheology experiments were also conducted to examine the viscosity increase with an increase in temperature to determine the processing window of the synthesized adhesive. Furthermore, different testing methods, such as peel adhesion testing, wet flex testing, radiation protective performance testing, and thermal protective performance testing, were performed to understand the real-life performance of the designed material. The optimized formulations showed impressive adhesive properties and provided better thermal protectiveness when compared with commercially available material for fire proximity clothing applications.
