Features of Interaction between the Gendarmerie and General Police Offi cers in Combating the Distribution of Illegal Literature in the Early 20th Century (based on materials from the Perm Province)

The article examines the features of interaction between the offi cers of the Perm Gendarmerie and the general police in combating the distribution of illegal literature in the Perm Province at the beginning of the 20th century. The principal forms of such cooperation included the exchange of information, including intelligence obtained through the surveillance of politically unreliable individuals, as well as actions undertaken by general police officers, such as the detention of persons suspected of distributing anti-government publications, the conduct of searches and arrests, and the subsequent transfer of collected materials to the gendarmerie for preliminary investigation. Special attention is paid to the systemic contradictions that made this interaction complex and inconsistent. Based on the research conducted, the author substantiates conclusions regarding the role of general police officers in supporting the gendarmerie’s efforts to combat the dissemination of illegal literature.
