This provides information on the data used in the paper titled “Trust and State Effectiveness: The Political Economy of Compliance” by Tim Besley and Sacha Dray, and steps to replicate its results. DATA SOURCES: Raw datasets needed for replication are in the folder "data/raw". 1/ WVS_Trend_v2_0. SOFTWARE VERSION: Stata SE 15.1. This version is configured in the set_environment.do. Operating System: Windows 11 Pro PACKAGES REQUIRING INSTALLATION: Stata packages : grstyle; estout; texdoc; ranktest; palettes; colrspace; unique; gr0034; _gwtmean; ftools; reghdfe; ivreg2; ivreghdfe. ESTIMATED RUN-TIME: 15 minutes. INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUNNING REPLICATION CODE: Step 1: Unzip replication-package.zip. In ".../replication/code" you will find the following do-files: 0. !master.do : do-file which sets root and runs all do-files below. 1. ZA7503_EVS_WVS_Merge_Syntax.do: do-file to produce Integrated_values_surveys_1981-2021.dta from the EVS and WVS datasets. 2. IVS_clean.do : do-file to produce IVS_clean.dta based on step 1, and merged with StateCapacity and income group classification 3. Tab1.do : reproduces Table 1: Trust and compliance with COVID-19 guidelines in the UK 4. Tab2.do : reproduces Table 2: Trust and compliance in the Integrated Values Survey 5. Tab3.do : reproduces Table 3: Trust and compliance in the Integrated Values Survey, IV results 6. Fig1.do : reproduces Figure 1: A positive cross-country relationship between two measures of trust and compliance 7. set_environment.do : set environment for all do-files, including software version. Step 2: open !master.do and set global root. The user should input the path to the replication folder where, in place of C:/example/root, the path to the location of the replication folder is put. Step 3: Run !master.do. All output will be created and saved in the folder ".../replication/output". If the output folder was not previously created, it will be created by the code in “set_environment.do”. Each individual exhibit can be created separately by running its corresponding do-file.
