PET‐ and Al‐Based Composite Materials Obtained by SHS‐Method of TiO ₂ –Al(waste)–PET(waste) System

The paper focuses on the self‐propagating high‐temperature synthesis (SHS) of composite materials, their phase composition and structure obtained by mixing plastic and aluminum wastes and the titanium oxide powder. It is found that SHS processes occur during high‐temperature exothermic reactions with a layer‐by‐layer propagation of the combustion wave. The obtained solid phase products are composite ceramics comprising alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) and titanium carbide (TiC) phases and Al–Ti intermetallic compounds Al 3 Ti and Al 2 Ti. SHS product gases mostly consist of hydrogen (54.31 vol.%) and carbon (31.64 vol.%). Moreover, the gas composition includes hydrocarbons (7.93 vol.%): methane, acetylene, ethylene, ethane, carbon dioxide and also some water, nitrogen, and oxygen. Based on the results, an interaction mechanism is expected for the TiO 2 –Al (waste) –PET (waste) system components during the SHS process. The obtained results constitute scientific prerequisites for the waste recycling development of plastic and aluminum using SHS.
