In this article, the historical path of The New York Times, a prominent US newspaper, on the eve of the American Civil War is traced. Its establishment, development, and rise to become a major force in US politics are examined against the US political landscape before the Civil War, including the US presidential election of 1860 and the growing conflict between the North and the South. Particular attention is paid to the role of H.J. Raymond, who founded the newspaper, in boosting its popularity throughout his journalistic and political career. The following distinguishing characteristics of the newspaper were identified: striving for the highest level of objectivity possible, ensuring that its reporting is accurate, and providing a platform for different interpretations and diverse voices. All these features enabled the newspaper to strengthen and solidify its voice on the national scene by the late 1850s and early 1860s.
