Comparative evaluation of effect of two different formulations of EDTA on solubility of bulk fill restorative composite resin: an in vitro study

Background. Pre-endodontic restorations serve as a crucial strategy for isolation. These restorations are subjected to irrigants during root canal therapy which modify their physical and mechanical qualities. Their strength is critical for long-term success, as they are frequently used in post-endodontic restorations. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of EDTA & EDTAC on the solubility of Posterior bulk fill composite resin. Aims. To compare and evaluate the solubility of restorative bulk-fill composite resin material after being exposed to 17% liquid EDTA, EDTAC, and distilled water for 5 minutes. Methods and material. A total of 18 disc-shaped samples were made from a bulk-fill restorative composite resin. Each disc was prepared using Teflon molds of 10 mm inner diameter and 4 mm depth. The bulk fill composite resin discs were randomly divided into three main groups, group 1 (distilled water), group 2 (EDTA), and group 3 (EDTAC), with six samples in each group. Pre and post-immersion solubility measurements were done. Data obtained were subjected to normality tests. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using one way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test using SPSS software version 22.0. Results. Mean solubility was 0.42 ± 0.16 in Group I, 1.16 ± 0.16 in Group II, and 0.95 ± 0.19 in Group III. This difference in the solubility was statistically highly significant between Groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions. Pre-endodontic composite build-ups may experience material deterioration during root canal therapy, after exposure to EDTA and EDTAC when employed as endodontic irrigants. Therefore, in order to achieve marginal integrity, durability, and long-term clinical success, replacing the pre-endodontic composite restoration should be taken into consideration before placing the definitive post-endodontic restoration.
