AI and the Future of Foundational Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming education and workforce development. Foundational learning now extends beyond literacy and numeracy to digital skills, adaptability, and critical thinking. AI supports this shift through personalized instruction, real-time feedback, and lifelong learning opportunities, helping learners stay competitive in a rapidly changing global workforce. Yet, challenges remain, including algorithmic bias, data privacy, unequal access, and the risk of over-reliance on technology. This chapter examines how AI can strengthen foundational skills, prepare learners for evolving careers, and address equity concerns in education. It argues that, when used responsibly, AI can expand access, foster inclusion, and align education systems with 21st-century workforce needs. By combining innovation with ethical safeguards and policy frameworks, AI has the potential to act as a catalyst for sustainable, human-centered learning worldwide.
