Design and Development of a Load Cell for RealTime Strata Monitoring using Internet of Things (IoT)

Mining involves the extraction of minerals from the earth's surface, whether through opencast or underground methods. Underground mineral extraction faces numerous challenges, including strata control, ventilation, and the safety of personnel and equipment. Strata behavior is dynamic and difficult to control, necessitating continuous monitoring to identify and mitigate potential hazards such as roof falls and rockbursts. Current strata monitoring practices use physical devices like tell-tales, telescopic convergence rods, and load cells, which require periodic manual readings, impeding continuous monitoring. Additionally, collecting data from instruments positioned at the goaf edge presents significant challenges and potential hazards. Integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) with existing devices can address some of these issues, providing real-time and continuous monitoring solutions for enhanced safety and productivity. This project aims to create a load cell-based continuous strata monitoring device utilizing IoT. The prototype device was initially tested in the Mining Engineering Department and subsequently in underground mines. Testing in various locations and conditions helped to determine the optimal data transmission range.
