Demystifying the Adoption of Mixed Methods Research Methodology in Informatics

Research methodology is invaluable for publicising the systematic techniques and tools used to address the research problem and questions. Traditionally, research was influenced by either realism or constructivism, and a sharp distinction existed between these worldviews. However, as more complex interdisciplinary phenomena are presented for research, especially in informatics, pluralism and its mixed methods research (MMR) approach is gaining momentum. This chapter will explain the MMR research paradigm, designs, sampling approaches, data collection techniques, analysis, and presentation in simple terms. This aims to reveal the key characteristics and distinguishing factors of MMR from other approaches, with the goal of raising awareness about its applicability in informatics. Furthermore, this chapter will inform researchers in informatics about the advantages and disadvantages of MMR, enabling them to properly plan and budget for their research activities and ensure ethical and valid research practices.
