The Internet of Things in the Defence Industry: Challenges and Solutions for Military Security

IoT applications have become so indispensable in the modern digital world; in the sphere of modern warfare, Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) or Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) is growing. The technology is based on equipping military-grade physical objects with advanced software and sensors in order to set up an exchange of data and execution of tasks with higher accuracy and speed. IoMT and IoBT enable soldiers to make use of several devices, combat equipment with embedded sensors capturing biometrics, among others. Given the rising complexity and unpredictability of military operations, IoT presents a strategic advantage in supporting the defence personnel to respond appropriately under intense pressure. However, security of the IoT applications has been a concern, more so in the defence sector, where breaches could cost not just revenue but even client trust. The security lapses in IoT applications may have disastrous consequences of the potentially causing sensitive data disclosure or erosion of stakeholder confidence.
