Changing Dimensions of Industrial Relations in the Indian Public and Private Sectors: A Review

With economic liberalization, labor law reforms, and advances in technology and the changing patterns of employment, India has experienced some important transformations in industrial relations. The changes have impacted both the public and the private sector in India, as this study helps reveal alongside examining the recent legislations along with the four Labour Codes set in motion during November 2025; the privatization of public sectors. The study also highlights the drop-in trade union membership, the growth of gig work, and changing patterns of collective bargaining. This paper accesses all aspects of state-sponsored literature and official records to facilitate a comprehensive analysis of the Indian industrial relations along with prevention statistics and citations. The generality of the policy reviews to most available official documentation shows that the trend is likely to proceed in this line. Indeed, except for unionized industries, the trend in the private sector is fast adoption of flexibility of employment while the public sector carries on with adaptive practices and strong unionization. The study gives a contribution to the better understanding of how India has been reflectively reactive to issues regarding globalization, digitalization, and the quest for balance between worker protection and economic competitiveness.
