A comprehensive analysis of the relationship between the severity of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack with blood calcium levels and other biochemical parameters

Background : Improving the accuracy of monitoring and predicting patient condition are important areas for refining protocols for managing patients with ischemic stroke (IS) and transient ischemic attack (tIa). Aim : the aim of the study was to identify more informative biomarkers enabling comprehensive assessment of the condition of patients with IS and tIa. Methods : In this study, we used a method of topological data analysis developed by the scientific school of raS academicians Yu.I. Zhuravlev and K.V. rudakov to assess predictive value of several biomarkers, including blood calcium (Ca++), protein C, and levels of antibodies against the Nr2 subunit of the N-methyl-d-aspartate glutamate receptor (anti-Nr2 aBs) in patients with tIa (n = 33) and IS (n = 55) aged 33–88 years. Venous blood oxygen saturation (so2) was also measured using the aBl80 FlEX Co-oX analyzer. Results: We observed complex interactions between blood calcium (Ca++), protein C, levels of anti-Nr2 aBs and the clinical status of patients diagnosed with ischemic stroke and tIa. Conclusion: Higher blood Ca++ levels were associated with lower anti-Nr2 aB titer and less severe ischemic stroke and/or tIa. Measurement of serum anti-Nr2 aB levels may be useful for additional prognostic assessments of patients with ischemic stroke or tIa, as well as for assessing the severity of their condition.
