Postpartum Depression as a Hidden Threat to Early Child Development: Challenges for the Early Intervention System in Kyrgyzstan

Postpartum depression remains an underrecognized and underresearched public health issue in Central Asian countries. This study aims to assess the prevalence and characteristics of postpartum depression in urban regions of the Kyrgyz Republic. We examine both global and national data on postpartum depression and investigate its risk factors using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Our findings reveal a high prevalence of postpartum depression, including symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, hopelessness, and suicidal ideation. These results are summarized herein. The impact of postpartum depression on maternal well-being, child development, and family dynamics is of significant concern and warrants further investigation across larger and more diverse urban and rural populations.
