Enhancing Pipe Recovery Operations Through Clean and Controlled E-Line Severance of 7 5/8" Casing in Challenging Well Conditions

Pipe recovery operations are a critical component of well remediation, particularly in unconventional basins where long laterals, complex casing programs, and high operational intensity increase the likelihood of mechanical damage and integrity challenges throughout the life of the well. As operators pursue higher stage counts and more aggressive stimulation programs, wellbore loads and intervention requirements continue to increase, placing additional demands on casing recovery and repair technologies. Conventional severance methods, such as explosive cutters, chemical cutters, or tubing-conveyed mechanical cutters, can introduce operational risk, increase cost, and require substantial surface logistics. In wells with restricted internal diameters, damaged tubulars, or limited tolerance for additional mechanical stress, these approaches may be difficult or impractical to deploy. Tubing-conveyed systems, in particular, may face challenges in setting, orienting, or fully actuating in constrained geometries, while explosive devices introduce additional HSE and regulatory considerations. Electric-line (e-line) conveyed mechanical cutting systems offer a rig-less, precise, and minimally invasive alternative. Their ability to deliver controlled, circumferential cuts without explosives, surface pumping, or heavy mechanical loads makes them particularly suitable for damaged or sensitive casing environments. By enabling real-time monitoring of tool performance and eliminating the need for multiple tool runs, e-line cutters can significantly reduce nonproductive time (NPT) and operational risk.
