Innovative Design of a Dual-Purpose Coiled Tubing Hanger for Integrated Gas Lift and Real-Time Fiber Optic Monitoring in Corrosive Environments

Abstract This paper presents the design, engineering, and validation of a novel Coiled Tubing (CT) Hanger developed to enable simultaneous CT Gas Lift (CTGL) production, stimulation operations, and real-time downhole monitoring using fiber optic technology. The system provides continuous downhole pressure and temperature data, eliminating the need for workovers to retrieve the CT, then run conventional logging tools and finally re-run the CTGL. The development focused on a customized CT Hanger incorporating a dedicated feedthrough for fiber optic cable integration while maintaining hermeticity in the wellhead while injecting and producing. The hanger was manufactured from corrosion resistant stainless steel to ensure a good performance in the long-term under corrosive environment. Engineering validation included pressure integrity testing, finite element analysis, flow simulations, load tests to the fiber and describing the installation and deinstallation procedure under pressure, to prevent killing the well prior to install the system. Results from the design verification and yard testing showed that the CT Hanger meets the required performance for CTGL, stimulation and continuous monitoring in corrosive environments. This paper documents Colombia's first CT Hanger system integrating gas lift, stimulation, and lifetime fiber optic monitoring. Field deployment is planned for 2026 and is expected to establish a new benchmark for cost-effective, rigless well management and intelligent well interventions in complex well environments.
