Using summary sentences to assess scientific reasoning in introductory physics lab

Abstract The purpose of this article is to introduce and advocate for experimental sentence summaries as a form of lab assessment in introductory physics labs. We discuss the reasoning which underlies different kinds of scientific experiments and show how summary sentences can capture and make that reasoning explicit to students. We then use examples of summary sentences our students have submitted to illustrate how they allow us to assess student understanding.
