Replication Friction: A Conceptual Metric for Reverse-Engineering Resistance in Product Systems

This work introduces the concept of Replication Friction as a conceptual engineering framework for analyzing the structural difficulty of reconstructing product systems from observation. Abstract Modern analytical tools and manufacturing capabilities have significantly reduced the time required to reverse engineer many physical products. However, not all engineered systems are equally reconstructable. Some products remain difficult to infer even when their components and materials are observable. This paper introduces the concept of Replication Friction, defined as the structural difficulty encountered when attempting to reconstruct a product system from observation. The concept focuses on architectural characteristics such as subsystem interdependencies, layered structures, and informational asymmetries that influence reconstructability. Replication Friction is not presented as a quantified metric, but as a conceptual lens for analyzing the relationship between product architecture and reverse-engineering resistance. The framework suggests that reconstructability may be influenced by the informational complexity embedded within system design.
