LGBTQ+ Representation in Schools: A Superintendent’s Experience Navigating Public Backlash

Abstract We explore challenges faced by a superintendent of a large Midwestern suburban school district in managing public backlash surrounding the controversy of student‑created posters of LGBTQ+ celebrities on display in a middle school for LGBTQ History Month. Labeled as “curriculum” by the opposition, demands to remove the posters accused the district of instructing students about sexuality without parental consent. The noninstructional posters presented celebrities and the definitions associated with their LGBTQ+ identities, in the spirit of the Got Milk? Campaign. This case study describes the local and social media’s involvement in creating the public outcry demanding that the posters be removed. The authors examine the school and district context, the events that unfolded, the stakeholder involvement, and the outcome. The superintendent reflects on the strategies employed to address the concerns from various stakeholders, including parents, community members, students, and faculty. The case study describes the superintendent’s well-intentioned compromise to provide a solution and how the school administrators perceived it. The superintendent’s reflective practice of using After‑Action Review provided insight from the Gay‑Straight Alliance sponsor and the principal, resulting in valuable lessons learned about all stakeholders participating in the discussion and decision‑making and living the district’s value of extending grace.
