Exploring the DoIP Protocol in Automotive Systems Architecture and Deployment Challenges

The increasing digitalization of the automotive sector and the transition toward electric vehicles (EVs) have introduced unprecedented requirements for scalable, high-bandwidth, and secure diagnostic communication. Diagnostics over Internet Protocol (DoIP), standardized in ISO 13400, emerges as a central enabler by leveraging Ethernet and IP-based networking to extend diagnostic workflows beyond traditional workshop tools. In contrast to legacy field buses such as CAN, LIN, or FlexRay, DoIP offers native compatibility with modern IT infrastructures, supporting Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates, cloud integration, and advanced fleet monitoring. These features are particularly relevant in EVs, where reliable diagnostics are critical for optimizing battery management systems (BMS), ensuring powertrain safety, and enabling predictive maintenance strategies. Furthermore, DoIP facilitates real-time data processing when combined with fog computing, enabling low-latency interventions for safety-critical functions and integration with Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) services. The contribution of this paper is the proposal of a distributed computing-based diagnostic architecture, which integrates DoIP with fog and cloud resources to enhance scalability, security, and resilience. Despite these opportunities, challenges remain regarding cybersecurity vulnerabilities, deployment cost, and incomplete global standardization. This paper highlights both opportunities and obstacles, positioning DoIP as a cornerstone for future software-defined and connected mobility.
