As online romantic relationship scams continue to proliferate, understanding the intricacies of scammers' manipulative strategies is paramount to effective prevention and intervention. This narrative review addresses the various facets of online romance scams grounded in the AI-oriented landscape, including the manipulation strategies, the psychological manipulation strategies used by scammers. The findings of this review sheds light on the intricate techniques employed by scammers in exploiting victims which resulted in emotional and psychological implications on victims. This review critically evaluates existing prevention and intervention strategies, involving the legislators, dating sites operators, users and publics to collectively working on targeted interventions and support systems. It provides practical insights into the techniques employed by scammers by elucidating the complexities of manipulation and aids in the formulation of more effective prevention measures to alleviate adverse effects and protect people from succumbing to scams.
