The Effects of a Collagen-Stimulating Hybrid Injectable in Patients With Darker Skin Types From South Africa

OBJECTIVE: This case series describes the literature gap on biostimulatory injectable fillers in patients of African descent with darker skin types. Expert perspectives are presented on the application and outcomes of a novel hybrid injectable containing the biostimulatory agent hyaluronic acid-calcium hydroxyapatite in patients with darker skin types from South Africa (Fitzpatrick skin types IV−VI). METHODS: A literature search was performed to explore current publications on injectable fillers for patients of African backgrounds with darker skin types. Case studies are provided to describe treatment outcomes and best practice recommendations on the use of hyaluronic acid-calcium hydroxyapatite in South African patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV−VI. RESULTS: Following treatment with hyaluronic acid-calcium hydroxyapatite, most patients observed a radiant appearance by day 3. One notable outcome was a skin resurfacing effect, characterized by increased smoothness and reduced bumps. Additionally, refinement in the general appearance of the skin was observed, with noticeable improvements in skin texture and reduction in pigmentation. CONCLUSIONS: In a case series of patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV−VI from 3 South African clinics, the use of hyaluronic acid-calcium hydroxyapatite resulted in improved satisfaction with their appearance, improved skin quality, and soft-tissue lift with no reported adverse events.
