Bibliometric Analysis of Knowledge Sharing in Virtual Teams: Approaches With Bibliometrix R‐Package

ABSTRACT This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of the literature on knowledge sharing in virtual teams, using the Bibliometrix R‐package 4.2 to analyze data from the Scopus database covering the period 2014–2024. It aims to provide a comprehensive overview of publication trends, identify prolific authors, institutions, and countries, highlight dominant keywords, and subject areas, and map the intellectual, social, and conceptual structures shaping the field. The analysis reveals major thematic clusters centered on trust‐building, collaborative practices, and the integration of advanced technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, in virtual teamwork. Notably, the findings emphasize the overrepresentation of North American and Asian contexts, while research from developing countries remains limited, despite the unique cultural, economic, and technological challenges these environments present. This geographical imbalance points to critical areas for future investigation. The study confirms the interdisciplinary and global scope of the topic, with the USA and China emerging as leading contributors, and smaller nations offering distinct regional perspectives. As one of the first bibliometric reviews focused exclusively on this domain, this research offers valuable insights into its evolution and identifies promising avenues for future exploration. It invites scholars to address existing gaps and to investigate collaborative dynamics in multicultural and digitally evolving environments, while leveraging emerging technologies to enhance knowledge exchange in virtual teams.
