The article presents the peculiarities of studying Ukrainian poetry in the school course of Ukrainian literature, its important role in the formation of key competencies of schoolchildren, as well as its high educational potential. The problem of studying lyrical works has attracted the attention of scientists and methodologists, but there is a need for a thorough systematization of the forms and methods of studying poetic works that contribute to the growth of national culture among schoolchildren and develop their oral speech, creative imagination, etc. The article analyzes the methodology of studying poetry in Ukrainian literature classes. In particular, it describes ways to achieve a deep understanding of poetic texts by students of different ages, the formation of the aesthetic and emotional spheres of each personality, and the encouragement of individual, original readings of lyrical works. The stages of working on poetic works and various approaches to studying poetry are identified. The use of innovative technologies, new teaching methods and techniques is outlined. Important techniques in the teacher's work remain the spoken word, expressive reading, verbal painting, various conversations, as well as comparing poetry with other types of art. The study provides a sample methodological lesson plan for studying the topic «The Mythical World of V. Gerasyuk's Poetry» according to the current curriculum. The methodology for studying lyrical works suggests that schoolchildren's perception and study of poetry is largely determined by age-related characteristics. The ability to understand the interaction of the elements of form and content of a work of art, to consider life and art in their aesthetic and historical context, determines such methods and techniques for studying poetry as: cultural, intertextual approaches, structural-semantic and comparative analysis, and review study. The study outlines further aspects of studying poetry in the school course of Ukrainian literature, the development of new effective methodological techniques in the work of a language teacher, which will contribute to the formation of key competencies of secondary education seekers, their ideological and aesthetic education.
