Patient Identity Protection and Duplicate Record Prevention in Electronic Health Record (EHR) Systems

The increasing adoption of the Electronic Health Records (EHRs) has transformed the way healthcare is provided by improving its accessibility, care continuity, and clinical decision-making. However, there are also multiple issues associated with this digital transformation regarding patient identity protection and duplicate records that has a direct impact on the accuracy of data, safety of the patient, and organizational efficiency. The bad or incomplete documentation of the patients can lead to inability to follow the medical standards, to repeat the tests and deficiency of confidence in using electronic health solutions. The paper below explains the most significant technological and governance-based approaches of enhancing patient identity management in EHR systems. Among the fundamental tools, that are mentioned to be utilized as the foundation on which unique identifiers are given and duplication of records is averted, is known as the Master Patient Index (MPI). Identity verification and data transparency are also becoming stronger with the help of new technologies such as biometrics authentication, blockchain-based identity systems, and Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) models. The paper is also concerned with the importance of data governance and adherence to the international standards, including the HL7 and FHIR, in order to attain the interoperability and compliance. The findings indicate that the multi-layered model, which involves technical, ethical and regulatory intervention, must be utilized to protect patient identity and maintain the quality of EHR systems.
