New pier for the PSA 101 aqueduct over the AP‐68 highway in Bilbao

Abstract The new pier for the aqueduct over the AP‐68 Highway consists of a composite structure with a variable‐width box section and a height of 8.50 m, embedded into a 5.50‐m‐high post‐tensioned concrete pedestal. The geometry of the structure, shaped as an inverted L, is governed by the permissible clearance and the location of the deck's support axis. The resulting eccentricity between the support bearing and the lower connection with the concrete pedestal is 7.50 m, representing a milestone for this type of intervention. This paper provides a detailed description of this structure and the innovative construction and load‐transfer process implemented.
