Sexual health project in a learning disability service: Development of accessible resources

People with learning disabilities experience significant inequalities in access to sexual health information and services, increasing vulnerability to adverse outcomes. This project aimed to identify barriers to accessible sexual health provision and improve support within Salford. Using stakeholder consultation with learning disability services, sexual health services, day centres, staff, families, and carers, key barriers included fear, stigma, lack of confidence, and poor inter-service connectivity. In response, resources were developed, including a comprehensive sexual health workbook for people with learning disabilities, a companion guide for carers, and practice guidance for professionals and carers. Service-linking initiatives were also implemented to promote coordinated, equitable, and sustainable sexual health support. Easy to read summary ■ People with learning disabilities do not always get clear information about relationships, sex, and sexual health. This can make things harder and less safe for them. ■ A project in Salford listened to people with learning disabilities, families, carers, and staff to understand what support was missing. ■ New easy-read resources were made, including a workbook about relationships and sex, a guide for carers, and simple guidance for staff. ■ Local services now work together better to help people with learning disabilities get the right sexual health support.
