Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

This chapter explores the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in UK policing through an analysis of application in investigations, predictive analytics, and workforce development. The chapter highlights the challenges of fragmented adoption, ethical oversight, and data governance, while proposing a strategic “Pathway to Excellence” for integrating AI and ML. The emphasis throughout is around transparency, collaboration, and digital capability. These technologies can enhance operational effectiveness and public trust in law enforcement but there is a need for strategic leadership, inter-force collaboration, and public engagement.
