• Makerspaces are celebrated for their contributions to economic development. • Policies related to makerspaces in Canada's 79 largest municipalities are examined. • Policy themes are compared to the vision statements of 138 makerspaces in these cities. • Makerspace policies do not align with makerspaces' own visions in Canadian cities.
