An Investigation of Predominant Management Leadership Styles Practiced in the Education Sector, Pretoria, South Africa

This study investigates the influence of management leadership styles on employee relations, organisational culture, and overall organisational productivity within the education sector in Pretoria, South Africa. The research was motivated by growing concerns regarding ineffective managerial practices that were negatively affecting employee performance, workplace relationships, and organisations productivity. The study aimed to identify the dominant leadership styles applied in the sector and to examine how these styles shape employee behaviour and organisational outcomes. A qualitative research design was employed, using semi-structured interviews with ten participants selected through convenience sampling from a population of managers and employees. Data were analysed using thematic analysis to generate meaningful patterns and insights. The findings indicate that transformational and transactional leadership approaches were most prevalent and positively influenced employee motivation, commitment, and job satisfaction, thereby enhancing organisational productivity. Transformational practices promoted inspiration, trust, and a shared vision, while transactional approaches supported accountability through clear expectations and reward systems. Autocratic behaviours were found to weaken employee relations and undermine performance. The study concludes that appropriate leadership styles play a critical role in shaping a positive organisational culture and sustaining productivity. It recommends targeted leadership development, mentorship programmes, and continuous evaluation to strengthen leadership effectiveness and organisational success.
