A catastrophic collapse of coal waste, the Aberfan mining disaster remains one of the darkest chapters in British history, one of unimaginable loss and profound sorrow but also of resilience and the enduring strength of a community united in grief. Merthyr Vale Colliery was the largest pit in the South Wales Coalfield, generating vast amounts of waste. In the days leading to 21st October 1966, it rained for days; dark, damp, dreary, misty, foggy days, this was the norm living in the Valleys. Life would never be the same. Short-term effects and physical traumas would heal; the lasting psychological trauma would never end. Just some of the emotional factors included feelings of numbness, being unable to eat, panic, outbursts of temper, acute anxiety, bitterness, tension, anger, restlessness, being overcome with grief, guilt, severe withdrawal from family and friends. In 2026, it will be the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster.
