THE TOPICALITY AND VALUE OF THE WORK OF SCULPTOR ALEXANDRU PLĂMĂDEALĂ

Two defining facets of the work of sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală (1888–1940) formed the basis of this study. The first refers to the pieces made of noble metals and organic stones crafted by the famous sculptor, a creation less known and appreciated by art historians and critics. The medallions made of silver (Portrait of I. Teodorescu-Sion’s wife, Portrait against the background of the monument, Portrait of the performer Lidia Lipcovschi) and miniatures made of ivory and wood are part of the collection of the National Museum of Art of Moldova. The second aspect concerns the workshop in Chisinau where the monument to Stephen the Great was cast, inaugurated in 1927 in the Public Garden that today bears his name.
