Impact of SGLT-2 Inhibitors on Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-analysis

SGLT-2 inhibitors are a promising new class of medications designed to help lower blood sugar while also offering important heart health benefits for people dealing with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This review looks at data from 15 studies to examine their impact on major heart issues, heart-related deaths, hospitalizations for heart failure, overall mortality rates, heart attacks, and strokes. The findings suggest that SGLT-2 inhibitors can reduce the risk of major heart problems by 9-16%, heart-related deaths by 11-19%, and hospitalizations due to heart failure by 18-27%. They also lower overall mortality by 7-12%. What’s particularly interesting is their effectiveness in preventing heart failure. These medications are beneficial for anyone with type 2 diabetes, even if they don’t have existing heart disease. However, they show a more modest effect on reducing the risk of strokes (2-7%) and heart attacks (5-10%). Importantly, these results support new guidelines that recommend these drugs for reducing the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), emphasizing their usefulness beyond just managing blood sugar levels. As we move forward, more research is needed to see how well they might lower the risks of stroke and heart attack, which could lead to better heart health for those living with diabetes.
