Environmental Design to Enhance Well‐Being and Experience for Healthcare Workers

The well-being of healthcare workers is a crucial component of healthcare quality, yet they often experience demanding and harmful workplace conditions that erode their own health, safety, and wellness. While many healthcare workplace difficulties cannot be remedied by the built environment alone, strategic facility design can improve workers' conditions and well-being. This chapter reviews empirical studies on environmental design and healthcare worker well-being, showing that design that fosters resilience, autonomy, cooperation, and safety might substantially improve caregiver experience within healthcare environments. Healthcare design trends are discussed and healthcare designers, design researchers, and health systems are called to work together to leverage facility design to support healthcare workers' well-being.
