This dataset provides daily meteorological records and derived extreme heat indices for mainland Portugal municipalities, during an extended warm season (May through September) from 2000 to 2023. The meteorological data were sourced from the E-OBS gridded dataset (v30.0e), a high-resolution daily gridded observational dataset for Europe provided by the Copernicus Climate Change Service. To align with local public health and administrative boundaries, the gridded minimum and maximum temperatures were spatially extracted and aggregated to the municipal level. The dataset includes binary classifications for two distinct thermal stress frameworks: the Excess Heat Factor (EHF) and the GATO IV index. Data dictionary:Time: Date formatted as YYYY-MM-DD. The data is subset to the extended summer months (May 1 to September 30) for the years 2000 through 2023.cca2: The official municipal identification code, the spatial identifier for the 278 municipalities in mainland Portugal.tx_v30_0: The maximum temperature.tn_v30_0: The minimum temperature.gato_975_binary: A binary indicator (<Q975 or Q975) representing the occurrence of extreme heat according to the GATO IV metric at the 97.5th percentile threshold. A value of Q975 indicates that the cumulative thermal stress for that specific municipality and day exceeded its local, dynamically adjusted upper-quantile threshold.ehf_bin: A binary indicator (0 or 1) representing the EHF index. A value of 1 denotes that the specific location and day met the threshold for extreme heat conditions based on the EHF formulation.
