Asbāb-e-Sitta Zarooriya as Determinants of Cellular Health: A Unani Framework for Lifestyle Disorders

This research paper explores the concept of Asbāb-e-Sitta Zarooriya (Six Essential Factors of Life) in the Unani system of medicine and its relevance in maintaining cellular health and preventing lifestyle disorders. Unani medicine emphasizes preventive healthcare through regulation of these six essential determinants: air (Hawā), food and drink (Makool wa Mashroob), bodily movement and rest (Harkat wa Sukoon-e-Badani), mental movement and rest (Harkat wa Sukoon-e-Nafsani), sleep and wakefulness (Naum wa Yaqzah), and retention and evacuation (Ehtebas wa Istifragh). Disturbance in these factors leads to imbalance in Mizāj, improper formation of Akhlāṭ, and dysfunction of bodily faculties, which may gradually result in lifestyle disorders. The study correlates classical Unani literature with modern biomedical understanding of cellular metabolism, hormonal regulation, and nutritional balance. This work is a literary review based on classical Unani texts such as Al-Qanoon fi al-Tibb, Kitab al-Hawi, Kulliyat-e-Nafisi, and other scholarly sources, along with modern scientific literature related to lifestyle disorders and preventive medicine. The paper highlights how proper regulation of Asbāb-e-Sitta Zarooriya supports cellular nutrition, metabolic balance, and overall physiological harmony. The study concludes that the classical Unani preventive framework remains highly relevant in modern healthcare for preventing lifestyle-related diseases.
