The Multiplayer Online Social Formation Cycle: A Framework for Understanding Digital Social Formation & Participation

This white paper introduces the Multiplayer Online Social Formation Cycle (MOSFC) — a practitioner-developed framework for understanding how digital participation emerges through social environments, not simply through access to technology or skills training. Developed by John Adewole PMP over a decade of frontline digital inclusion practice in London, MOSFC describes a six-stage cycle — Discovery, Participation, Social Bonding, Skill Development, Identity Formation, and Transfer — through which individuals move from digital exclusion to confident, sustained digital participation. The framework draws on social formation theory, game studies, and community development practice, and extends the author's earlier Bridge-Bond-Self-Disclose-Meet-Repeat social model. The paper presents MOSFC alongside the Seven Pillars of Future-Proofed Digital Communities and grounds both frameworks in real-world evidence from partnerships with NHS England and the Greater London Authority. It concludes with five policy recommendations for government, funders, and practitioners, and proposes research questions for academic investigation. This work is intended for policymakers, digital inclusion practitioners, educators, community technologists, and researchers working at the intersection of digital society, gamification, and social participation.
