The influence of information from digital buildings on fire service operations

This study investigates how decision makers at the fire service responds to different types of information and how it can enhance fire service operations during incidents. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 47 incident commanders from three countries (Sweden, Finland and USA) to assess the influence of pre-planned, real-time, and predictive information on decision-making. The results indicate strong support for real-time data and well-structured static information which can enable faster and more precise responses. This was found to be particularly prominent in Sweden and Finland, where more than 90% of participants strongly agreed that this type of information would be useful for incident commanders. Timely access to real-time data information, particularly at the dispatch stage, is regarded as essential. However, the study also identifies a disconnect between advanced predictive tools and the practical requirements of incident commanders. Overall, the findings highlight the need to translate complex sensor and simulation data into clear, actionable insights for effective fire service use. • Interviews with 47 fire incident commanders in three countries are conducted. • The support provided by digital building information is studied. • Smart building data can enhance fire service operations. • A gap remains between predictive tools and commanders’ practical needs. • Incident commanders value transparency and familiarity in data sources.
