Is the IT/BPM Industry Fulfilling the Expectations of Employees? An Expectation Gap Analysis From a Gender Perspective

Abstract The psychological contract consists of employees’ beliefs about the contributions that they owe to the employer. It revolves around how well the important expectations of each party are met by the other and is a good framework to study the employee–employer relationship. The study first extracts three key dimensions of employee expectations, including a good manager/supervisor, growth opportunities and work and related benefits, using Principal Component Analysis with respect to the IT and BPM industries. Further, it compares the expectations of female employees with those of their male counterparts to show that women are less satisfied than men. If organisations in India want to improve labour force participation rates for women, they will have to find ways to meet the unfulfilled expectations of women rather than blindly adopting practices from the West. The results from this study will aid organisations in framing their policies to build a better and more rewarding work culture.
