ESG potential of using phosphogypsum in poultry manure processing

The article presents the results of an experimental assessment of using phosphogypsum dehydrate for agriculture (GOST R 58820-2020) – a large-tonnage by-product of chemical industry – as a component for composting cage layer manure. The research was conducted considering modern approaches to sustainable development (ESG), focused on reducing environmental impact, decarbonization, and implementing circular economy principles. During a 90-day experiment. The effect of different phosphogypsum doses (10, 20, 30% of the absolutely dry matter weight) on the physical and chemical properties of the compost mixture, gas emissions, and the quality of the final product was studied. It was found that adding 30% phosphogypsum reduces total nitrogen losses by 6.2%, decreases peak ammonia concentration in the working area air by up to 18%, and yields an organic fertilizer enriched with calcium (Ca content increases from 4.6 to 8.5%). The finished compost meets microbiological and parasitological safety requirements. The obtained data can serve as a basis for further research and the development of technologies aligned with sustainable development goals in the agro-industrial complex.
