As a person a village boy, I faced the same challenge many Sri Lankans struggle with: the fear of snakes. For years, snakes felt like a threat—dangerous creatures that created panic and harm simply because we lacked proper understanding and guidance. Once I learned the basic truths about snakes, everything changed. Deep herpetological knowledge is essential for experts, but most people don't need that level of detail. They simply need to know how to coexist safely with snakes to protect both themselves and these vital creatures. That realization inspired this book. But I must be clear: I am not the expert. The true knowledge within these pages comes from the scientists, herpetologists, and—most importantly—the dedicated snake guardians who risk their lives every day to rescue and protect these animals. I am merely a collector, a gatherer of their wisdom, bringing it together so that it may reach every corner of our island. Think of snake awareness like a key: to reach peaceful coexistence, you don't need to become an expert—you just need to know which path to take. The path has been laid by those who have dedicated their lives to this cause. This book is for every person in Sri Lanka—from the village farmer to the urban resident—who wants to live safely alongside snakes without fear and misunderstanding. My aim is to share what I have learned from these true heroes, so you too can move confidently from fear to respect, recognizing snakes not as a threat but as a friend. This work is dedicated to the snake rescuers across our island—the true guardians whose names fill this directory—and to the scientists whose knowledge guides us. They are the ones who save lives, both human and serpent. I am simply the messenger.
