From Human-Operated to AI-Operated: The Human Gate Pattern in Production Agentic Systems

We introduce the Human Gate Pattern: an architectural primitive where AI systems operate complete business processes end-to-end, with human gates positioned only at points of legal, financial, or physical consequence. Grounded in Dharmakīrti's distinction between KARMA (the executed deed, auditable and reversible) and DHARMA (moral judgment, human-reserved). Documented across 16 production systems in 7 domains including maritime operations, trade finance, legal compliance, and electronic bill of lading. We argue the Human Gate Pattern is not a safety afterthought but the enabling condition that makes full AI operation acceptable in regulated environments, and that the 85% autonomy ceiling is a permanent structural property, not a temporary limitation.
