The Effect of Early Maladaptive Schemas on Marital Dynamics in Married Individuals: A Model of Happiness, Relationship Satisfaction, And Perceived Power in the Relationship

Early maladaptive schemas are cognitive–emotional patterns that develop in childhood and adolescence and may become activated in adulthood, particularly within close relationships. This study examined the associations between early maladaptive schemas and marital dynamics—happiness, relationship satisfaction, and perceived power in the relationship (positive/negative)—and tested the extent to which schemas predict these outcomes among married individuals. Using a quantitative correlational design, data were collected online from 445 married adults living in Türkiye. Validated measures assessed early maladaptive schemas, happiness, relationship satisfaction, and perceived relational power. Given acceptable normality indicators, parametric analyses were conducted. Multiple regression analyses showed that schemas significantly predicted happiness (R² = .42), with pessimism, social isolation/mistrust, failure, enmeshment/dependence, and defectiveness predicting lower happiness, whereas entitlement/insufficient self-control predicted higher happiness. The model predicting positive perceived power was significant (R² = .55): emotional deprivation, pessimism, social isolation/mistrust, and punitiveness were negative predictors, while emotional inhibition and self-sacrifice were positive predictors. The model predicting negative perceived power was also significant (R² = .61): emotional deprivation, failure, social isolation/mistrust, and self-sacrifice were negative predictors, whereas unrelenting standards was a positive predictor. For relationship satisfaction, emotional deprivation, social isolation/mistrust, approval-seeking, and enmeshment/dependence were negative predictors, whereas abandonment and unrelenting standards were positive predictors. Overall, findings highlight the importance of considering early cognitive–emotional structures—beyond behavioral interaction patterns—when understanding marital functioning.
