The Structural Architecture of North American Confederations: A Deep Research Analysis of Indigenous Governance, the Confederation Period, and the Texas Transition

This paper presents a rigorous archival and structural analysis of the confederated governance model as the foundational political technology of North America, tracing its continuous thread from pre-contact Indigenous confederacies through the Articles of Confederation and into the mid-nineteenth-century sectional crisis. The analysis demonstrates that the Haudenosaunee Confederacy’s Great Law of Peace — a 117-article oral constitution encoding bicameralism, executive accountability, matrilineal checks on power, and divisible sovereignty — constituted a living institutional model directly studied by Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and delegates to the Constitutional Convention. Structural parallels between the Gayanashagowa and the U.S. founding documents are examined in comparative table form, including legislative process, executive removal, reserved powers, and military oversight. The paper further documents the ten presidents who served under the Articles of Confederation prior to George Washington, contextualizing their terms within the decentralized confederated framework those Articles embodied.
