Lasercom as an enabler for multiorbit networks in space

Laser communication (Lasercom) has emerged as a cornerstone technology for modern satellite communications, enabling high-speed, secure, and low-latency data transfer across and between orbital layers. With the rise of LEO satellite constellations and the growing demand for multiorbit connectivity, scalable and interoperable Lasercom terminals have become essential. This paper presents TESAT’s SCOT product family—comprising the SCOT20, SCOT80, and SCOT135—which collectively address the diverse requirements of VLEO, LEO, MEO, and GEO missions. Each terminal is tailored to specific use cases, supporting data rates from 2 Mbps to over 100 Gbps and distances up to 80,000 km. The paper emphasizes the critical role of interoperability in fostering a competitive, multi-vendor ecosystem and highlights TESAT’s active contributions to SDA and ESTOL standardization efforts. Looking ahead, the integration of advanced routing capabilities into Lasercom systems will enable intelligent data routing across space-based networks. This development marks a significant step toward realizing a fully connected "internet in the sky," supporting initiatives like the ESA-led HydRON mission.
