Demonstrative PHA-based rigid packaging solutions and production of PHB from brewers' spent grain

Funded by the CBE, BioSupPack aims to scale up new, economically viable, and high-performing bio-based rigid packaging solutions made from PHA, also suitable for recycling and recovery. The project has explored, first at lab-scale and pilot level, and then at large scale, the possibility of using brewery by-products (beer spent grains) as a fermentation feedstock for PHB production. BioSupPack focuses on final consumers’ satisfaction and perceptions to deliver marketable products after the project ends in the food, beverage, home care, and cosmetic packaging segments.
