Ultrafast Supercontinuum Generation in Packaged Silicon Nitride Photonic Chips

Photonic supercontinuum generation has been an high-effective laser source that features ultrabroadband spectral coverage and high coherence, and has enabled a variety of applications in the range of communications, spectroscopy and optical metrology. Towards realistic applications and to ease the operation, packaging of photonic waveguide chips seems an essential step, but is non-trivial since the segment of optical fibers would affect the ultrafast process underlying the supercontinuum. Here, we demonstrated packaged photonic chips for ultrafast supercontinuum generation in soliton self-compression regime and the coherence of the supercontinuum inherits from an optical frequency comb source. The affection of the bridging fiber between the pumping laser and the packaged chip is studied. Together with maintained ultrabroadband supercontinuum above 2 octaves, the packaged chip module concurrently emits ultrashort temporal pulses that are self-compressed to be <30 fs. Such results highlight the potential of photonic supercontinuum in realizing stable, robust and compact laser sources.
