Character Challenges in Values Education of Senior Students and Their Coping Mechanisms in the Philippine University

This study examines the experiences and challenges faced by senior students in the Values Education program at Leyte Normal University. It aims to understand character challenges, coping strategies, and educator interventions that impact student engagement and moral development. The research, involving five fourth-year students, seeks to identify specific challenges and strategies within a limited sample, recognizing potential biases and the non-generalizability of findings. Ethical considerations, including informed consent and confidentiality, are in place to protect participants. The study adopts a qualitative design, emphasizing real-world issues through non-numerical data like interviews and observations. It aims to understand individual experiences in values education among students at Leyte Normal University, using descriptive phenomenology to capture their perspectives. Data collection will occur during the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year, targeting fifth-year Bachelor of Secondary Education students majoring in Values Education. Employing purposive sampling, five participants aged 20 to 25 with relevant experience will be selected, ensuring rich insights while adhering to the student’s objectives. The study on character challenges in values education among senior students at Leyte Normal University (LNU) identifies difficulties in applying learned values due to socio-economic pressures, peer influence, and biases. Internal conflicts and societal norms hinder integration of values like courage and empathy. Coping mechanisms include seeking support from teachers and family, along with engaging in self-reflective activities. The research emphasizes the importance of supportive environments and experiential learning opportunities to aid students in overcoming these challenges and effectively integrating values into their lives. Additionally, adaptable teaching methods and fostering open discussions are recommended to create a conducive learning atmosphere.
