Variational Formulation and Effective Nonlinear Self-Confinement in the ESMA Framework

This work presents a rigorous variational formulation of the Extended Schrödinger Model Approach (ESMA), an effective nonlinear framework designed to investigate intrinsic self-confinement mechanisms in wave dynamics. The model incorporates two complementary nonlinear contributions: a logarithmic density-dependent term and a variance-based confinement functional. Both terms are derived consistently from well-defined energy density functionals within a generalized action principle. A key result is the formal derivation of the ESMA equation through functional variation, including a careful treatment of the dependence of the expectation value. The resulting nonlinear equation preserves normalization, admits a conserved Hamiltonian, and recovers the standard Schrödinger equation in the linear limit. A variational analysis based on a Gaussian ansatz provides analytical support for the existence of stable, self-confined wave structures, resulting from a balance between dispersion and nonlinear effects. The global formulation is interpreted as a mean-field approximation, and a systematic pathway toward a fully local nonlinear field theory is outlined through kernel-weighted density functionals. This work establishes the ESMA framework as a structurally consistent nonlinear extension of wave dynamics, providing a formal foundation for previously observed numerical stability and soliton-like behavior.
