Co-Existence of Denutrition and Obesity in Elderly Senegalese Individuals: A Pilot Study with Impedancemetry and MNA

The question this study addressed. This study assessed, in 73 Senegalese adults aged 60 years and over, the prevalence of undernutrition (according to full MNA) and obesity (according to impedancemetry), and analyzed their coexistence. What this study adds. It shows that 52.1% of participants have a nutritional issue (17.8% overt undernutrition, 34.2% at risk). Among undernourished or at‑risk subjects, 82.1% have excess total body fat and 51.3% excess visceral fat. This double burden is more pronounced in men: 90% of undernourished men have excess body fat (including 60% obesity) and 75% abdominal obesity, compared with 73% and 10.5% in women, respectively. Undernourished subjects have significantly more fat than non‑undernourished subjects, particularly men (p = 0.004). This publication is available in full in Health Research in Africa.
