Characteristics of Chronic HBsAg Carriers at Fann University Hospital in 2024: A Prospective Study

The question this study addressed. This study analyzed the serological profiles (HBeAg, anti-HBc IgM) and the frequency of HCV co-infection in 388 chronic HBsAg carriers followed at Fann University Hospital laboratory in Dakar in 2024. What this study adds. It shows that only 3.1% of patients are HBeAg-positive, mostly young males (20-39 years). The absence of anti-HBc IgM in all participants confirms chronic infection. HCV co-infection is rare (0.8%). These findings suggest a predominance of inactive carriers or those in the immune-tolerant phase, with potential risk of reactivation but a low current burden of co-infection.
